The Risks of Weight Loss Surgery
Many obese men and women today are beginning to turn towards weight loss surgical options to help them lose the
excess pounds. Many studies have been done associated with these surgeries to point out the many different health
risks associated with them. Obesity is a serious health problem and one that should be dealt with as seriously as
possible and a commitment to a weight loss surgery shows commitment to your long term health but it is not always
the safest avenue to take. Of course many health care professionals will say the best way to lose the weight is
naturally. As an obese person you may already know that natural forms of weight loss are no longer enough for
you.
A person is considered to be obese when they are at least 100lbs above the average weight for their age. It is
more common to see a higher weight above the average than this and only then are you considered for a weight loss
surgery. There is not only physical preparation required for a surgery like this but most importantly, mental and
emotional preparation. Obesity is an extremely complicated disease and one that encompasses every aspect of a human
being, not just their physical appearance and health but their mental state as well. There is no one reason why a
person becomes obese but there are many different reasons why it is too hard to go back.
The number one weight loss surgery is called a gastric bypass. This surgery has a great deal of stipulations on
it because of the many health risks associated with it. This surgery basically takes your stomach and staples it so
it is half the size it used to be. The most severe risk with this surgery is binge eating after it is over. Many
people who are obese suffer from an eating disorder which brought them to this surgery option. Because of this a
great deal of mental and emotional preparations are required in order to make sure the person is ready to begin
eating normally in order to keep down their weight. If after the surgery the same eating habits continue this has
the potential to kill. As the stomach expands it can explode and cause instant death.
Other risks associated with these surgeries include blood clots, heart problems, lung collapse and infections.
These risks can be manageable if they are caught in time. Often the doctors performing these surgeries state the
risks associated with the procedures are far less than the risk of doing nothing for this obese person. This can be
argued in many ways and there is no right or wrong answer only the facts. The fact is there are life and death
risks associated with weight loss surgeries and unless you are severely shortening your lifespan this should not be
an option for you. Try everything you can to lose weight naturally and avoid the risks associated with these
dangerous operations.
Weight loss surgeries can produce immediate results but it is impossible to know how your body and mind will
react to them and this is where you are taking the biggest risk of all. Speak with your family, friends and doctors
before making this big decision. Only when you know all the statistics and all the information can you make an
informed decision. Weight loss should not something that includes a dangerous aspect, it should be natural and a
lifestyle change. Speak to your physician before making any decisions about your weight loss strategies. They can
help predict your outcome and if natural weight loss options would be more effective.
